Five Purposes of the Church

2011 February 07

The wise man, Solomon, reminds us of the importance of a vision. Whether we speak of a business, a family, or a church, there should be a common goal that all are working toward to succeed. That goal would be the vision set before us. It is possible for us to be a part of something and still lose our vision, missing the overall picture… what we are there for in the first place. Last Sunday, I delivered a message concerning five important purposes of the New Testament Church. These should be important to us all if we want to enjoy the greatest blessings in God's house, and witness prosperity in our churches. As I mentioned, it is God that blesses our churches, and our greatest attempts to do all we can do will result in nothing without His blessings. Yet, we do have a purpose and it should be our desire to understand it, and attempt to fulfill it. I will not go in to detail in this short article. I will just give you the basic points and a few thoughts:

Casting Stones

CASTING STONES "So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her."-John 8:7 Our message today revolves around our Lord as He displays His sovereign mercy, and grace. Sinners love mercy. Mercy means that we did not receive the punishment we justly deserved. Sinners also love grace.

WHICH WAS THE GREATEST MIRACLE?

2006 March 12

"Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk." On this notable occasion we have two worshippers, apostles of Jesus Christ, entering the temple to pray. Peter and John, friends in the faith, were doing what they had always done at the ninth hour of the day, three p.m. our time: they were going to worship. There was no television cameras planted. There was no music director to move the emotions of people. There was no program to follow. There were not even any seats for spectators to admire what they were ...

FALSE PROPHETS - part 1

2006 February 19

"But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not."-2 Peter 2:1-3 We've all heard the proverbial adage: "You wouldn't know it if you saw it", or, ...

FORGETTING!

2006 January 15

As the New Year approaches we are reminded of the Apostle Paul's words to the Philippians: "forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." These words stand as great reminders to all Christians to live for the day, not for the past. Paul was not lingering in the past. His vision was upon the future. Paul was not saying, nor are we, that we should forget good memories and fond times with our family and loved ones. Certainly these are treasures we may all p ...

"And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not"- Genesis 28:16
Here we find Jacob, fleeing from his brother, Esau, in a waste howling wilderness. He has left the comforts of his home, a loving mother and a wise father as he makes his bed under the starry skies with only a rock for a pillow. As he sleeps, he sees in a vision, a ladder reaching up to the stars with angels ascending and descending upon it. He realizes that thi ...

"Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness"-Ephesians 6:14 Last week we considered the Christian battle and the fact that every Christian will be engaged by the enemy. Thus, the Lord has provided His people with Holy armour sufficient for the evil day. This Ephesian letter is one of Paul's prison epistles. As he looked upon his keeper, the Roman soldier, Paul considered the Christian soldier and attributed a spiritual connotation to each piece of the soldier's armour. The first piece of armour the apostle mentions is the g ...

SIGNS OF HIS RETURN

2005 March 26

The world has just witnessed what has been described as the most horrible natural disaster in history. What a comfort it is for us to know that Jesus Christ is still ruling in the armies of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. Surely, as we view the terrible scenes of those who are suffering it should cause us to be very thankful for the blessings around us. This disaster is very indicative of our Lord's words in Luke, 21:25, when He described what may very well be the sign of His return: "And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth d ...

ANGELS AROUND US

"And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." –Luke 2:13-14 Today, we have before us Luke's account of the angels' herald, the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Much is said about angels in the Bible, so during this holiday season, we share some thoughts with you upon our spiritual friends, the angels around us. JANUARY, 2005 From the pastor The coming of a New Year affords us all the opportunity to approach 2005 with great hope and anticipation. I have asked every member to make at least one New Year's resolution concerning their walk with Jesus Christ. Whether it is to be more faithful to God's house, to sing louder, to pray more consistently or to be faithful to God's word, it is certainly an endeavor worthy of our attention. I have heard it said that sharing our resolutions with family and friends helps us to be faithful to them. I announced to our church that my New Year' ...

Who Knoweth

"Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"-Esther 4:14 Our thoughts today are centered around the soul searching question of Mordecai, which question all believers have mused in their own hearts from time to time. The question is one of speculation, as to whether or not God had orchestrated the events surrounding their present plight. It concerns the beautiful thought of God's providence and His divine intervention in the lives of His people. The word providence is pregnant with thought and imagination. Not only does it mean that God is actively ...

#167 ENCOURAGEMENT FOR MARRIAGE

One of my favorite preachers once said, "A man who says he never had a fight with his wife will lie about other things to." Surely, it is a challenge for two sinners to live together under the same roof for years and foster an atmosphere of peace and harmony. Yet, this is God's design and we should not be totally discouraged if disagreements arise from time to time. God is interested in every marriage. Whatever we do, we do it not only for self, for children, for family, but also to honor the Lord Jesus Christ. That is why the old prophet said: " ... .take heed to your spirit, an ...

KEEP YOUR NETS MENDED

When Paul wrote I Corinthians, he wrote to a house divided. Corinth was plagued with many problems causing a rift among God's people. In his opening remarks, Paul beseeched the brethren to "be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgement(1:10)." The words, "perfectly joined together" were words the Corinthians well understood. They were words that referred to the mending of torn fishing nets. #138 KEEP ME FROM EVIL

We feel to know much about the man, his character and his vision from the words that ascended from his lips as he approached the most High. Among those we find a noble petition: "Keep me from evil." It is wise to ask the Lord to keep us from evil. Without the hand of God we are no match for Satan. He will sift us as wheat and bring much pain into our lives.
