Oppositions of Science

2011 November 10

Paul concludes this letter to Timothy with the following admonition: "O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen." - 1 Timothy 6:20-21 The word "science" is translated from a word that literally means knowledge. Paul is telling Timothy to avoid any knowledge that is in opposition to God's revealed truth. Most Christians are very savvy to this, especially when it comes to the most basic fundamentals of Christianity such as the deity of Christ, the virgin birth, and the resurrection. Yet, when it comes to science, many Christians throw their Bibles away and bow down to the test tube and the microscope. To put it succinctly, they place the scientist above God's holy word.

In the Latter Times

2011 July 07

"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth."- 1st Timothy 4:1-3 In our messages from 1st Timothy we considered the apostle’s words to Timothy concerning the "latter times". I must admit, that I had a preconceived notion as to what these words meant. But in my study I realized that Paul’s warning went much deeper into the school of theological thought than I had first realized.

Love Fulfills The Law

2011 February 04

While preaching through the book of 1st Timothy, we came to this dynamic statement of the apostle Paul to Timothy: "Now the end of the commandment is charity…". Charity is the highest form of love and Paul‘s statement means that charity is the most important thing in our personal lives, as well as the Christian Church. It also means that genuine charity will fulfill every commandment and that is why it is so important. This is a magnificent statement. But what does it mean and how does it apply to our lives?

A New Year's Promise

2007 March 05

"But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus"- Philippians 4:19 The Philippian church was special to the apostle Paul. In this epistle he refers to them as "my brethren dearly beloved and long for, my joy and crown." One of the reasons he loved them so much was because of their care for him. When he was in prison they sent to his needs, a gift at the hand of Epaphroditus that he referred to as "an odour of a ...

A FAITHFUL SAYING

2006 March 05

"This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief"- 1 Timothy 1:15 Though we have heard of those who have claimed perfection, who have lived above sin all of their lives, we prefer Paul's faithful saying: Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of all the things that Paul has written, the Christian can identify with these words for every genuine Christian has been made to feel this way. By these words, Paul claimed to be the worst of Christians. His life was marred by the grossest of er ...

SIGNS OF HIS RETURN

2005 March 26

The world has just witnessed what has been described as the most horrible natural disaster in history. What a comfort it is for us to know that Jesus Christ is still ruling in the armies of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. Surely, as we view the terrible scenes of those who are suffering it should cause us to be very thankful for the blessings around us. This disaster is very indicative of our Lord's words in Luke, 21:25, when He described what may very well be the sign of His return: "And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth d ...

JANUARY, 2005 From the pastor The coming of a New Year affords us all the opportunity to approach 2005 with great hope and anticipation. I have asked every member to make at least one New Year's resolution concerning their walk with Jesus Christ. Whether it is to be more faithful to God's house, to sing louder, to pray more consistently or to be faithful to God's word, it is certainly an endeavor worthy of our attention. I have heard it said that sharing our resolutions with family and friends helps us to be faithful to them. I announced to our church that my New Year' ...

Who hath saved us

2003 February 12

"…God; Who hath saved us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began"-II Timothy 1:9 Are you saved? If you are then who saved you? Did the preacher save you? Did a particular message save you? Were you saved by ceremonies and traditions? In his affectionate letter to Timothy, Paul did not claim his personal salvation to any of these, nor did he claim to have saved Timothy. He gave the honor and glory to the only savior of sinners: "God, who hath saved us". The word "us" is v ...

A FAITHFUL SAYING

"This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief"-1 Timothy 1:15 Paul felt himself to be the chief of sinners. He did not feel himself to be just one of the many sinners, he felt to be the worst of the worst. This was not a one time experience that he felt prior to his conversion and baptism, this was the way he felt all the time. If one were to tell their doctor, "Sir, I feel to be the chief of sinners and I am prone to depressed spirits from time to time", the ...

"I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day"-2 Timothy 1:12 An able man is always the best man for the most difficult task. When it is fourth down and one yard to go, let us give the ball to the man who has proved his ability to blast through the line. When there are only a few seconds on the clock and a three pointer will win the game, let the player who has proved his ability take the last shot. The anchor man must be sure footed and able ...

#135 THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CHURCH

"But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth"-1 Timothy 3:15 Truth is a rare commodity in the modern marketplace. Whether we speak of history, religion, politics, science, or even medicine we will find conflicting sentiments. When we finally find some answers that are supported by substantial evidence we find peace in our hearts, for our search is over and the problem at hand is solved. There is a place of peace, a place for spiritual searching to end, th ...

#127 I HAVE PRAYED

2001 April 09

This week, we witnessed the most horrific act of terrorism this country has ever known, the destruction of the World Trade Center and the an attempt to destroy the Pentagon and who knows what other targets. Even in our little town, it seemed like pandemonium as people raced to the gas stations in fear of what tomorrow might bring. In the midst of chaos it is a great comfort for us to remember that Jesus Christ sits at the right hand of God the Father and is still in control of all things. In the panic of it all I observed something very interesting: people on CNN were actually talking abou ...

#106 A DAY OF PRAYER

2000 September 23

This last Wednesday, at the request of one of the students, I was blessed to attend the flagpole prayer service at Poyen school. Many students, faculty, parents and ministers were present as the students prayed and read some scripture. We all sang "Amazing Grace" together. One of the other ministers turned to me and said, "We don't need the music for this one" as we all lifted our voices together and sang praise to our God. One of the students was called upon to read a scripture. As she opened her Bible I wondered which one she would read. Tears came to my eyes as she read, "If my people, ...

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil"- I Thessalonians 5:16-22 The Apostle further calls upon us to "Prove all things". This means to "try" or "examine" what has been preached. Is it truth or "cunningly devised fables"? Is what has been preached the wisdom of God or the wisdom of man? Did it come ...

#14 In the Beginning (continued)

1999 December 06

It is possible for one to be a creationist concerning nature, but an evolutionist when it comes to spiritual things. It is by faith that we see God as the sovereign creator of both worlds: the natural and the spiritual. When God created man, He did not ask man's opinion. Adam was passive when God formed him from the dust of the earth and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils. God needed no assistance. All of nature was passive. The birds, the fish, the earth, there was none of it. God spake and it was done. But what about regeneration, the new birth, when one of Adam's ra ...

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth"-GENESIS 1:1 Evolution, or the false science of evolving, comes from the word "evolve" which claims that the universe has slowly, over a process of millions or billions of years, been unfolding from a state of disorder to a state of order. But God, and the believer's textbook declares that the earth, the universe, man and all of His creation is not evolving, but rather "waxing old", degenerating, reeling and rocking from a state of peace and order to a predicted ...

This one event affected the climate, the vegetation, the habitat and the strata of the whole surface of the earth. This event was, of course, the great flood. Denied by many scientists, the great flood has left indelible imprints upon every section of the world. It is the only logical explanation to the marine fossils found at the tops of the ...

OPPOSITIONS OF SCIENCE "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth"-GENESIS 1:1 Scientific evidence, when accurately observed and presented, will always agree with the Genesis account of creation. But there is a branch of science that has always been dangerous to Christianity. While it claims to be in opposition to Genesis 1:1, Paul says that it is not opposition at all but rather, "falsely so called", because all true science must agree with the Creator of all things. Paul wrote to Timoth ...
