Oppositions of Science

2011 November 10

Paul concludes this letter to Timothy with the following admonition: "O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen." - 1 Timothy 6:20-21 The word "science" is translated from a word that literally means knowledge. Paul is telling Timothy to avoid any knowledge that is in opposition to God's revealed truth. Most Christians are very savvy to this, especially when it comes to the most basic fundamentals of Christianity such as the deity of Christ, the virgin birth, and the resurrection. Yet, when it comes to science, many Christians throw their Bibles away and bow down to the test tube and the microscope. To put it succinctly, they place the scientist above God's holy word.

Dear College Student:

2011 June 24

Dear College Student, I am writing to you today to encourage you to consider the words that Paul wrote to Timothy: Avoid "profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called."(1st Timothy 6:20). He is telling this young man in the ministry to avoid that part of science that is in error, that part that opposes God's Holy word. These are false accusations of science to destroy your faith.

SIGNS OF HIS RETURN

2005 March 26

The world has just witnessed what has been described as the most horrible natural disaster in history. What a comfort it is for us to know that Jesus Christ is still ruling in the armies of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. Surely, as we view the terrible scenes of those who are suffering it should cause us to be very thankful for the blessings around us. This disaster is very indicative of our Lord's words in Luke, 21:25, when He described what may very well be the sign of His return: "And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth d ...

JANUARY, 2005 From the pastor The coming of a New Year affords us all the opportunity to approach 2005 with great hope and anticipation. I have asked every member to make at least one New Year's resolution concerning their walk with Jesus Christ. Whether it is to be more faithful to God's house, to sing louder, to pray more consistently or to be faithful to God's word, it is certainly an endeavor worthy of our attention. I have heard it said that sharing our resolutions with family and friends helps us to be faithful to them. I announced to our church that my New Year' ...

October, 2004 From the pastor Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Since the time of our last newsletter, we have enjoyed the fellowship of our South Arkansas Association. ...baptized for the dead?

2004 June 03

"Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?"- 1 Corinthians 15:29 There were some confused Christians at Corinth. Some had been led to believe that there was no resurrection of the dead. Many arguments the apostle places before them, showing not only the infallible proofs of His resurrection, but also what it would mean to them if Jesus had not risen. He tells them that preaching would be in vain if Christ is not risen, for what hope is there in a dead king. He reminds them that their faith would be in vain f ...

BAPTISM, THE ANSWER OF A GOOD CONSCIENCE

2004 March 25

"The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ" 1 Peter 3:21 Through the centuries, the ordinance of Baptism has been misrepresented as to its purpose and benefit in the New Testament Church. It was during the 1800's, that Spurgeon preached his great sermon against "Baptismal Regeneration" which sermon is still available today in the reprinted sermons of this great preacher. Simply, and we must add, Biblically put, baptism is "the answer ...

THE DEAD SPEAKING

That man was a great sportsman. That woman could tell a good joke. They were the life of the party. Whatever our case, we come to the sober conclusion that the dead do speak long after they have departed this life and what is said should be the concern of every honest Christian. He did not feel himself to be just one of the many sinners, he felt to be the worst of the worst. This was not a one time experience that he felt prior to his conversion and baptism, this was the way he felt all the time. #156 HAVE I EVER SEEN A CHRISTIAN

2002 July 16

There is the story of the little boy who asked his father what a Christian was. After the father had given his explanation his little boy looked up into his face and asked, "Father, have I ever seen a Christian?" The question pierced the father's heart as we would imagine, but the illustration is good and serves as an exercise of our own conscience as fathers. And though Father's Day is past, these words are an excerpt from our sermon last Sunday and we felt them to be important enough to share with every father today. To be a father is a high calling of God which carries with it ...

GOD'S TEMPLE

2002 February 05

Corinth was a city of sin. The temple of Aphrodite was there, a temple dedicated to this goddess of fertility. Over one-thousand consecrated temple prostitutes plied their trade among the inhabitants and visitors of Corinth and it was here that the Lord placed one of His churches to shine a light in the midst of the darkness. To shine their light, this church must not conform to the world. Worldly wisdom had permeated their ranks and there were those who were advocating that it really did not matter how a person lived, how they used their bodies. Fornication was the chief sin of Corinth, p ...

Jabez was "more honourable than his brethren". As we read the words of his prayer In 1 Chronicles, 4, we gain a glimpse of his honor. We feel to know much about the man, his character and his vision from the words that ascended from his lips as he approached the most High. Among those we find a noble petition: "Keep me from evil." It is wise to ask the Lord to keep us from evil. Without the hand of God we are no match for Satan. He will sift us as wheat and bring much pain into our lives. Is it not evil that causes so much pain in our world? That was the reason of Jabez's pe ...

I thought of Paul, and how many times his trips were delayed, not due to plane connections, but due to shipwreck, stonings, beatings and all manner of persecutions. I found great comfort in knowing that even though preachers could be hindered from preaching at a desired place, God would not allow circumstances ...
