Five Purposes of the Church

2011 February 07

The wise man, Solomon, reminds us of the importance of a vision. Whether we speak of a business, a family, or a church, there should be a common goal that all are working toward to succeed. That goal would be the vision set before us. It is possible for us to be a part of something and still lose our vision, missing the overall picture… what we are there for in the first place. Last Sunday, I delivered a message concerning five important purposes of the New Testament Church. These should be important to us all if we want to enjoy the greatest blessings in God's house, and witness prosperity in our churches. As I mentioned, it is God that blesses our churches, and our greatest attempts to do all we can do will result in nothing without His blessings. Yet, we do have a purpose and it should be our desire to understand it, and attempt to fulfill it. I will not go in to detail in this short article. I will just give you the basic points and a few thoughts:

But God meant it unto good

2006 May 07

"But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive." Genesis 50:20 When all was said and done, Joseph was not ignorant concerning God's sovereignty and His providential dealings in his life. Though, to us, God's dealings with Joseph seem quite severe we see that God had a purpose in Joseph's afflictions. As the story goes, he was thrown in to a pit by his own brothers; sold by them to the Ishmalite traders; sold by the trades for profit as a slave for Potipher; falsely accused by Potifer's wife; thrown into p ...

AMAZING GRACE

"For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth" Romans 9:11 What a great blessing we have before us today. God displays His everlasting love to save His people from their sins, not by works, but by His sovereign grace. The example the apostle uses to display God's distinguishing grace are meted out in Old Testament types and shadows by two brothers, Jacob and Esau. According to Paul, before these two children were born, God chose Jacob. I have heard some say tha ...

WHICH WAS THE GREATEST MIRACLE?

2006 March 12

"Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk." On this notable occasion we have two worshippers, apostles of Jesus Christ, entering the temple to pray. Peter and John, friends in the faith, were doing what they had always done at the ninth hour of the day, three p.m. our time: they were going to worship. There was no television cameras planted. There was no music director to move the emotions of people. There was no program to follow. There were not even any seats for spectators to admire what they were ...

THE SHEPHERDS VOICE

2006 February 26

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me"-John 10:27 In the eastern hill country there was no sound more comforting to sheep than the shepherd's voice. If we were to observe the flock as they fed upon the verdant meadows, we would see a head rise here and there to catch a glimpse of the shepherd. Every few moments, we would hear a bleat echo through the canyons as one of the fold communicated to the others: "All is well. The shepherd is near, his rod and staff I see in the distance." Just knowing that the shepherd's eye was upon them, brought comfort to the helpl ...

"Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness"-Ephesians 6:14 Last week we considered the Christian battle and the fact that every Christian will be engaged by the enemy. Thus, the Lord has provided His people with Holy armour sufficient for the evil day. This Ephesian letter is one of Paul's prison epistles. As he looked upon his keeper, the Roman soldier, Paul considered the Christian soldier and attributed a spiritual connotation to each piece of the soldier's armour. The first piece of armour the apostle mentions is the g ...

ANGELS AROUND US

Much is said about angels in the Bible, so during this holiday season, we share some thoughts with you upon our spiritual friends, the angels around us. ...baptized for the dead?

"Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?"- 1 Corinthians 15:29 There were some confused Christians at Corinth. Some had been led to believe that there was no resurrection of the dead. Many arguments the apostle places before them, showing not only the infallible proofs of His resurrection, but also what it would mean to them if Jesus had not risen. He tells them that preaching would be in vain if Christ is not risen, for what hope is there in a dead king. He reminds them that their faith would be in vain f ...

"Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ"Ephesians 3:8 Paul counted it a great honor and privilege to preach "The unsearchable riches of Christ." This was the foc ...

#45 The Power of the Tongue

1999 July 01

" A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof."-Prov. 18:20-21 Every word that proceeds forth from the mouth is a seed sown in the world in which we live. Our harvest will be according to that in which we sow. It may be poisonous or wholesome, for the Lord of the harvest will carefully wat ...

#43 Our need of Grace

1999 June 15

"The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen."- Revelation 22:21 While the Old Testament ends with the word "curse", what comfort we find in the closing words of the New, "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen." It so pleased God to end the divine cannon of scripture with a short prayer which means so much to us: our need of God's grace. As John's petition still lingers for us before God's throne, let us examine our perso ...

#39 I Believe in Angels (part 2)

"For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both"-Acts 23:8 Inhabitants of a spiritual realm, unobserved by the natural eye, except when they desire to be seen and heard, we will find our angel friends. In that unseen world, they are busy creatures delivering messages, assisting God's people in battles, and supporting and strengthening the hands of those who labor for God. Jacob obse ...

1999 April 08

"Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the Lord"-1 Samuel 1:20 It is at this time of the year that we focus our attention to that special person in our life that has meant so much to us all: our mother. We all have but one. While the Bible does not mention mother's day, it does say a lot about mothers and we find no greater e ...

#32 It is Written Again

1999 March 22

"Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God"-Matthew 4:7 Our message today centers around one of the greatest battle scenes in history. This battle is not fought with bombs and missiles. It is fought with a weapon more powerful than all of these, the most powerful weapon found upon the face of the earth: "the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God". The battle is between the Son of God and our arch-enemy, Satan ...

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven"-Matthew 5:14-16 In His sermon on the mount, Jesus used one little word to describe what His disciples were to be. Simple were His word ...

"By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff"-Hebrews 11:21 The last words of a dying man are not easily forgotten, especially when they come from a loving parent or grandparent. Among the Hebrews, the blessing, in the form of a prayer, was frequently the last earthly experience between children and parents. The purpose: "That it might be more attended to and regarded, and more strongly impressed upon the mind." We have known of some who used ...

The Active and Passive Inheritance of God's Children

PASTOR FEBRUARY 1994 "THE ACTIVE AND PASSIVE INHERITANCE OF GOD'S CHILDREN" Over the centuries, divines have enjoyed preaching and teaching the Biblical subject of inheritance to God's people. As we read the many scriptural passages that deal with the subject of inheritance there seems to be areas in which the scriptures disagree or do not compliment one another. One reason is because some scriptures deal with that part of our inheritance which lies beyond this life while there are other scrip ...
