Oppositions of Science

2011 November 10

Paul concludes this letter to Timothy with the following admonition: "O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen." - 1 Timothy 6:20-21 The word "science" is translated from a word that literally means knowledge. Paul is telling Timothy to avoid any knowledge that is in opposition to God's revealed truth. Most Christians are very savvy to this, especially when it comes to the most basic fundamentals of Christianity such as the deity of Christ, the virgin birth, and the resurrection. Yet, when it comes to science, many Christians throw their Bibles away and bow down to the test tube and the microscope. To put it succinctly, they place the scientist above God's holy word.

Love Fulfills The Law

2011 February 04

While preaching through the book of 1st Timothy, we came to this dynamic statement of the apostle Paul to Timothy: "Now the end of the commandment is charity…". Charity is the highest form of love and Paul‘s statement means that charity is the most important thing in our personal lives, as well as the Christian Church. It also means that genuine charity will fulfill every commandment and that is why it is so important. This is a magnificent statement. But what does it mean and how does it apply to our lives?

The Unspeakable Gift

"Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift"- 2 Corinthians 9:15 As Paul encouraged the Corinthian church to take up a collection for the poor saints, he could find no greater encouragement than to compare their giving to what God had given them for their redemption. He turned their attention to Christ, the unspeakable gift of God. Paul was saying to them, "God loved you so much that He gave His only begotten Son for you. Consider this gift as you take up your ...

THE PREACHING OF THE CROSS

"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God"-1 Corinthians 1:18 We have heard some say that they detest Christianity because it is a bloody, messy religion with its cross and suffering. Their abhorrence of Christ's blood and His suffering is a witness that separates all of humanity: those who view the cross as foolishness and those who view the cross as the power of God. This was Paul's line in the sand, his measuring rod, his litmus test as to those who were truly saved. Thus he wrote to the church at Corinth, "For th ...

God displays His everlasting love to save His people from their sins, not by works, but by His sovereign grace. The example the apostle uses to display God's distinguishing grace are meted out in Old Testament types and shadows by two brothers, Jacob and Esau. SUNDAY WORSHIP

Peter and John, friends in the faith, were doing what they had always done at the ninth hour of the day, three p.m. our time: they were going to worship. There was no television cameras planted. THE SECURITY OF THE SAINTS

2006 January 29

While reading about the persecution of Christians in a bygone era, we came across a gruesome account of one of the most atrocious and hateful crimes committed against them. According to the writer, the enemies of the Christian Church would torture their victims with such painful methods that they would, with their tongues, deny their faith and the Lord who bought them. This was their enemy's method of, supposedly, sending them, forever, to hell. The Apostle Paul was familiar with some of these methods. Prior to his regeneration and conversion he committed essentially the same torments to Chris ...

These words stand as great reminders to all Christians to live for the day, not for the past. Paul was not lingering in the past. His vision was upon the future. Paul was not saying, nor are we, that we should forget good memories and fond times with our family and loved ones. Certainly these are treasures we may all p ...

An old song in a hymnbook has a verse predicated upon this scripture that illustrates the full meaning of Paul's thought. It says, "Let us walk in the light of the gospel divine." Why try to be something or do something that I know is beyond my ability?" I have a lot of fond memories of grade school. We had some wonderful teachers in our little school at Donaldson, Arkansas. #166 THE END OF THE WORLD

2002 May 14

There are a lot of theories concerning the end of the world. The reason I say "theories", is because there is nowhere in scripture that many of the ideas commonly advanced are really spelled out. Some say, that when Jesus returns, He is going to set up a kingdom which will continue for one-thousand years during which time those who are not saved will have a second chance. Others say that the kingdom will begin one-thousand years before Jesus comes. Various ideas of what will happen during these "millennial reigns" are given, which get so confusing that I have yet to hear two people explain ...

"Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing"-Psalm 100:1,2 Music has a profound influence upon the soul. It affects our emotions, our feelings and has the power to change our mood in a heartbeat. Just by adding music to the score of a movie, producers can dictate how the audience should feel about a particular scene. A song can take us back in time to people and places long forgotten. Music can lift us up and it can bring us down. Yet, there are di ...

ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE BEREAVED

One of the greatest sorrows known to God's children is the loss of a loved one from this life. Today, let us consider some of the great promises our Lord has given His children for encouragement during the times of such great loss. In his letter to the Thessalonians, Paul wrote, "But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as other which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him"(4:13,14). Many times, we forget the purpose of Jesus' ...

FORGET NOT ALL HIS BENEFITS

Today we would pose a question to all: "Is there a benefit in serving God: is there a benefit in going to God's house; is there a benefit in reading His word; is there a benefit in prayer; in private devotions; to Christian living?" How do you feel about it? What is your opinion? We pose the question not to condemn those who would answer in the negative. Rather, we pose the question as an encouragement to those who feel in their hearts that there is a benefit in serving God for there are times of wonder and amazement when we notice as Job did that, "The tabernacles of robbers prosper ...

KEEP YOUR NETS MENDED

2002 March 26

When Paul wrote I Corinthians, he wrote to a house divided. Corinth was plagued with many problems causing a rift among God's people. In his opening remarks, Paul beseeched the brethren to "be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgement(1:10)." The words, "perfectly joined together" were words the Corinthians well understood. They were words that referred to the mending of torn fishing nets. Paul was saying to them, "If you want to catch fish, keep your nets mended." Division is satan's greatest tool……it always has been. Since he is no mat ...

One of the most difficult tasks of the ministry is the funeral service. As Paul wrote, "Who is sufficient for these things". What man can reach the soul and calm the troubles waters? Corinth was a city of sin. The temple of Aphrodite was there, a temple dedicated to this goddess of fertility. Over one-thousand consecrated temple prostitutes plied their trade among the inhabitants and visitors of Corinth and it was here that the Lord placed one of His churches to shine a light in the midst of the darkness. To shine their light, this church must not conform to the world. Worldly wisdom had permeated their ranks and there were those who were advocating that it really did not matter how a person lived, how they used their bodies. Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven" –Matthew 18:21-22 These words of Jesus reflect something that seems to be drifting from our vocabulary, a kind of math that is not new, but ancient as the Godhead, treasured up in the person of Christ: it is the mathematics of grace. 1999 November 19

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth"-GENESIS 1:1 Evolution, or the false science of evolving, comes from the word "evolve" which claims that the universe has slowly, over a process of millions or billions of years, been unfolding from a state of disorder to a state of order. But God, and the believer's textbook declares that the earth, the universe, man and all of His creation is not evolving, but rather "waxing old", degenerating, reeling and rocking from a state of peace and order to a predicted ...

#62 THE PEACEMAKERS ARE HAPPY

1999 November 08

"Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." In His seventh Beatitude, Jesus approaches a level of Christian maturity that not every disciple will achieve. Here we are called upon to place the cause of Christ first in our lives. "What I want" and "How I feel" must be replaced by "What is best for the cause." Here we become willing to die to self for the cause of Christ and the prosperity of His kingdom. Such is the attitude ...

OPPOSITIONS OF SCIENCE "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth"-GENESIS 1:1 Scientific evidence, when accurately observed and presented, will always agree with the Genesis account of creation. But there is a branch of science that has always been dangerous to Christianity. While it claims to be in opposition to Genesis 1:1, Paul says that it is not opposition at all but rather, "falsely so called", because all true science must agree with the Creator of all things. Paul wrote to Timoth ...

"Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted"-Matthew 5:4 The second of our "Beatitudes" will take us a step further in our relationship with Christ. In our initial experience our eyes were opened as our loving Father faithfully exposed our self-righteousness and sin. We found ourselves poor sinners in need of Christ's riches. But our loving Father does not leave us in such a condition…we must grow. Here we find a second pronouncement of bl ...

#4 In the Beginning (continued)

1999 September 19

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth"-GENESIS 1:1 Genesis 1:1 is also one of the deepest theological statements in all of the Bible. The first verse of the Bible declares that God is self existent. In other words, He has no beginning or end...He has always been. This, in itself, is mind boggling to earthly creatures who live in a world marked with time. Therefore, "In the beginning" does not declare the beginning of God, but rather, the beginning of God's creation: the beginning of time. God ...

The things that Paul here enumerates are security and serenity to the sinner. They strengthen our faith and our hope. They ...

As Solomon said, "There is no new thing under the sun." In Acts 17, almost 2000 years ago, Paul encountered "certain philosophers" at Athens who are referred to as the "Epicureans". This was one of their schools of modern philosophy who followed the teachings of one Epicurus. Do you know what that taught at this mod ...
