Through The Faith of 'OTHERS'

2011 May 29

Jesus healed His people in many ways. Sometimes He would just speak some words, and the person would be healed. At other times, He would touch the sinner, and the problem would immediately depart from the helpless victim. We find lepers, begging for an audience with Christ; and a woman, pressing through a crowd with a hope in her heart that she might just touch Him. Here we find a great lesson for us all. A helpless sinner is healed, not by his own seeking, but through the faith of his friends. Perhaps we can learn a lesson from this notable miracle, and help one of our loved ones who has fallen prey to Satan.

Casting Stones

CASTING STONES "So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her."-John 8:7 Our message today revolves around our Lord as He displays His sovereign mercy, and grace. Sinners love mercy. Mercy means that we did not receive the punishment we justly deserved. Sinners also love grace.

Memoir: Joe Cox

Given to Pastor: 3/02 My great grandmother was a Primitive Baptist and died at age 93 in 1919. Only her oldest daughter became a member of Primitive Baptist faith. One son became a Methodist minister of renown in Mississippi and Arkansas…1890's to 1930's. He was a graduate of Emory U. My grandmother and one sister and three brothers became Southern Baptists. The main thing I remember was them talking about all day meeting, and how tired they (children) were at days end. Also, laughing about shape note singing and foot washing. THE PREACHING OF THE CROSS

2006 May 14

"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God"-1 Corinthians 1:18 We have heard some say that they detest Christianity because it is a bloody, messy religion with its cross and suffering. Their abhorrence of Christ's blood and His suffering is a witness that separates all of humanity: those who view the cross as foolishness and those who view the cross as the power of God. This was Paul's line in the sand, his measuring rod, his litmus test as to those who were truly saved. Thus he wrote to the church at Corinth, "For th ...

But God meant it unto good

2006 May 07

"But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive." Genesis 50:20 When all was said and done, Joseph was not ignorant concerning God's sovereignty and His providential dealings in his life. Though, to us, God's dealings with Joseph seem quite severe we see that God had a purpose in Joseph's afflictions. As the story goes, he was thrown in to a pit by his own brothers; sold by them to the Ishmalite traders; sold by the trades for profit as a slave for Potipher; falsely accused by Potifer's wife; thrown into p ...

AMAZING GRACE

"For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth" Romans 9:11 What a great blessing we have before us today. God displays His everlasting love to save His people from their sins, not by works, but by His sovereign grace. The example the apostle uses to display God's distinguishing grace are meted out in Old Testament types and shadows by two brothers, Jacob and Esau. According to Paul, before these two children were born, God chose Jacob. I have heard some say tha ...

In his work entitled, "All the women of the Bible", Dr. Herbert Lockyer wrote: "Christianity, as we are to see, brought full emancipation to womanhood, and wherever Christ is recognized as Saviour and His truth is obeyed, woman is esteemed as man's loved companion, confidant and, in many ways, his better half. Through the centuries the social and legal status of woman has fluctuated. In times of fierce persecution they suffered much. Where heathenism still reigns, the life and lot of women are far from the freedom and joy the experience where Christianity is recognized. From the 18th

THE SHEPHERDS VOICE

2006 February 26

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me"-John 10:27 In the eastern hill country there was no sound more comforting to sheep than the shepherd's voice. If we were to observe the flock as they fed upon the verdant meadows, we would see a head rise here and there to catch a glimpse of the shepherd. Every few moments, we would hear a bleat echo through the canyons as one of the fold communicated to the others: "All is well. The shepherd is near, his rod and staff I see in the distance." Just knowing that the shepherd's eye was upon them, brought comfort to the helpl ...

THE SHIELD OF FAITH

"Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked."-Ephesians 6:16 Among the equipment that God has provided for His people to wage their spiritual war against Satan is found "the shield of faith". Faith is a marvelous weapon and it must be held before all the other pieces to protect the warrior. Faith is a simple, childlike trust in God. It is believing that the Lord will do what He has promised in His word. It is persevering, even when it seems that the world is against us, knowing that He is able to change our circumstance in th ...

Simply put, ministry means serving: doing something for someone else expecting nothing in return. According to Peter, every member has received this particular gift who is a real Christian. He alone receives the glory for the salvation of His people. Should the slave complain in that he has been made free by another? Jabez was "more honourable than his brethren". As we read the words of his prayer In 1 Chronicles, 4, we gain a glimpse of his honor. We feel to know much about the man, his character and his vision from the words that ascended from his lips as he approached the most High. Among those we find a noble petition: "Keep me from evil." It is wise to ask the Lord to keep us from evil. Without the hand of God we are no match for Satan. He will sift us as wheat and bring much pain into our lives. Is it not evil that causes so much pain in our world? That was the reason of Jabez's pe ...

#137 GIVING THANKS

2001 June 18

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday it is good that we give thanks to God for our many blessings. In the days of the Old Testament, lovers and worshipers of God gave thanks by offering up the firstfruits of their crops to Him that blessed their harvest. Today, let us offer up the "fruit" of our lips as we pause to thank the Lord for the bounty of another day. "Giving thanks" is a mental attitude. By the writings of the apostles we are encouraged to catch it and keep it by practicing it. Our holiday suggests it to a nation. Not only does giving thanks render praise unto t ...

As you enter the door of my study at Harmony Church, you will find a plaque that displays the wise words of Solomon:"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones"-Proverbs 17:22. This is one of my favorite scriptures because it reminds me of an attitude, a posture that should be displayed in the house of God, and among God's people in general. It reminds me of what people around me need, even when I do not feel merry myself and that this medicine needs to be dispensed in abundance because it is good for God's people. Consider with me "Good Medicine". ...

His purpose was always before Him. Even as a child He would say, "I must be about my Father's business." He came to redeem His people from their sins and nothing moved Him from His purpose till the atonement was made and the captives set free. To be focused means that we have a goal in life, a God honoring purpose and that we are moving towards that purpose in a determined way. As our Lord's face was "stedfastly set to ...

#128 PERSPECTIVE

2001 April 16

It has been over a week since the tragic events transpired in New York and Washington. Many questions are before the eyes of America today. Why? Will it happen again? If so, where? What should we do about it? How should we do it? To how many should we do it to? Why did God allow it? Were the people in the towers greater sinners than others? From liberals to conservatives, from country to country, even from the core of America we seem to have conflicting signals to many of these questions. Yet, what we really need to know is what God thinks about it all; what is He saying to us; what is God ...
