Dear College Student:

2011 June 24

Dear College Student, I am writing to you today to encourage you to consider the words that Paul wrote to Timothy: Avoid "profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called."(1st Timothy 6:20). He is telling this young man in the ministry to avoid that part of science that is in error, that part that opposes God's Holy word. These are false accusations of science to destroy your faith.

Through The Faith of 'OTHERS'

2011 May 29

Jesus healed His people in many ways. Sometimes He would just speak some words, and the person would be healed. At other times, He would touch the sinner, and the problem would immediately depart from the helpless victim. We find lepers, begging for an audience with Christ; and a woman, pressing through a crowd with a hope in her heart that she might just touch Him. Here we find a great lesson for us all. A helpless sinner is healed, not by his own seeking, but through the faith of his friends. Perhaps we can learn a lesson from this notable miracle, and help one of our loved ones who has fallen prey to Satan.

Meditations for 2008

2007 March 26

As we approach the New Year, we are encouraged by the psalmist's words, "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God."(Psalm 90:2). At first thought, we mused over some new year's resolutions that we might encourage ourselves and our readers to consider. But we remembered many we have made in the past that were forgotten somewhere about January 2nd and cast our eyes to One who is more reliable for the year to come, even throughout eternity.

"But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus"- Philippians 4:19 The Philippian church was special to the apostle Paul. In this epistle he refers to them as "my brethren dearly beloved and long for, my joy and crown." One of the reasons he loved them so much was because of their care for him. When he was in prison they sent to his needs, a gift at the hand of Epaphroditus that he referred to as "an odour of a ...

LAODICEA--The Lukewarm Church

2007 January 22

"So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth." (Revelation 3:16) Churches have doctrines--but they also have temperatures! If a church is alive, Jesus is present, and He is aware of them both. While doctrine is most important, other things factor in to our Lord's analysis of a church's condition. Laodicea didn't seem to have a problem with their doctrine. Nor is there any mention of reprobates or unconverted people in their midst. Yet, Jesus was just as angry with these as He was with some of the other churches mentioned. He was ...

THE PREACHING OF THE CROSS

2006 May 14

"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God"-1 Corinthians 1:18 We have heard some say that they detest Christianity because it is a bloody, messy religion with its cross and suffering. Their abhorrence of Christ's blood and His suffering is a witness that separates all of humanity: those who view the cross as foolishness and those who view the cross as the power of God. This was Paul's line in the sand, his measuring rod, his litmus test as to those who were truly saved. Thus he wrote to the church at Corinth, "For th ...

Through the centuries the social and legal status of woman has fluctuated. In times of fierce persecution they suffered much. Where heathenism still reigns, the life and lot of women are far from the freedom and joy the experience where Christianity is recognized. From the 18th

SUNDAY WORSHIP

2006 March 26

"Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils."- Mark 16:9 There is a notable reason why Christians have worshipped on the first day of the week since its very beginning: it is the day that Jesus rose from the grave. What better way to celebrate the atonement for sin, the abrogation of the law service, the promise of eternal life and the ascension of Jesus Christ back to the Father, than to meet and wor ...

On this notable occasion we have two worshippers, apostles of Jesus Christ, entering the temple to pray. Peter and John, friends in the faith, were doing what they had always done at the ninth hour of the day, three p.m. our time: they were going to worship. There was no television cameras planted. There was no music director to move the emotions of people. There was no program to follow. There were not even any seats for spectators to admire what they were ...

THE SECURITY OF THE SAINTS

2006 January 29

While reading about the persecution of Christians in a bygone era, we came across a gruesome account of one of the most atrocious and hateful crimes committed against them. According to the writer, the enemies of the Christian Church would torture their victims with such painful methods that they would, with their tongues, deny their faith and the Lord who bought them. This was their enemy's method of, supposedly, sending them, forever, to hell. The Apostle Paul was familiar with some of these methods. Prior to his regeneration and conversion he committed essentially the same torments to Chris ...

As the New Year approaches we are reminded of the Apostle Paul's words to the Philippians: "forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." These words stand as great reminders to all Christians to live for the day, not for the past. Paul was not lingering in the past. His vision was upon the future. Paul was not saying, nor are we, that we should forget good memories and fond times with our family and loved ones. Certainly these are treasures we may all p ...

The world has just witnessed what has been described as the most horrible natural disaster in history. What a comfort it is for us to know that Jesus Christ is still ruling in the armies of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. Surely, as we view the terrible scenes of those who are suffering it should cause us to be very thankful for the blessings around us. Faith is a marvelous weapon and it must be held before all the other pieces to protect the warrior. Faith is a simple, childlike trust in God. Paul does not leave us to guess what this metaphor stands for in our Christian battle. It is the word of God, the Holy Scriptures. Can you imagine a soldier going out to battle without their sword? Some had been led to believe that there was no resurrection of the dead. Many arguments the apostle places before them, showing not only the infallible proofs of His resurrection, but also what it would mean to them if Jesus had not risen. The oldest confessions of the Christian faith emphatically declare a belief in the trinity, and most importantly, we find it declared from Genesis to Revelation. After the father had given his explanation his little boy looked up into his face and asked, "Father, have I ever seen a Christian?" The question pierced the father's heart as we would imagine, but the illustration is good and serves as an exercise of our own conscience as fathers. And though Father's Day is past, these words are an excerpt from our sermon last Sunday and we felt them to be important enough to share with every father today. To be a father is a high calling of God which carries with it ...

#157 FOUNDATIONS

2002 July 09

"If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?"-Psalm 11:3 Today, our message centers around the recent decision handed down by the appellate court that their children can no longer say, "One nation under God". Thankfully, we have seen many leaders of our land rise up in protest to this attack upon God, the foundation of our great country. Though the pens of historians and journalists are doing their best to change the truth into a lie, this country was founded upon God's word, by men and women se ...

#166 THE END OF THE WORLD

2002 May 14

There are a lot of theories concerning the end of the world. The reason I say "theories", is because there is nowhere in scripture that many of the ideas commonly advanced are really spelled out. Some say, that when Jesus returns, He is going to set up a kingdom which will continue for one-thousand years during which time those who are not saved will have a second chance. Others say that the kingdom will begin one-thousand years before Jesus comes. Various ideas of what will happen during these "millennial reigns" are given, which get so confusing that I have yet to hear two people explain ...

ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE BEREAVED

One of the greatest sorrows known to God's children is the loss of a loved one from this life. Today, let us consider some of the great promises our Lord has given His children for encouragement during the times of such great loss. In his letter to the Thessalonians, Paul wrote, "But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as other which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him"(4:13,14). Many times, we forget the purpose of Jesus' ...

Today we would pose a question to all: "Is there a benefit in serving God: is there a benefit in going to God's house; is there a benefit in reading His word; is there a benefit in prayer; in private devotions; to Christian living?" How do you feel about it? What is your opinion? We pose the question not to condemn those who would answer in the negative. Rather, we pose the question as an encouragement to those who feel in their hearts that there is a benefit in serving God for there are times of wonder and amazement when we notice as Job did that, "The tabernacles of robbers prosper ...

Grateful, thankful, excited about God's presence among his people, full of love for the Lord, Moses wanted to share his experience with others. The Lord's people love evidence of their calling. A prayer answered or a genuine experience with the Lord serve as "handfuls of purpose" to increase our strength and revive our hope for tomorrow. Our Lord has also been gracious to provide many evidences of our calling in sacred writ. Sprinkled amidst the numerous verses of scripture, the Lord has given abundant proofs of our calling that serve to be just as dynamic as prayer answered or miracles observed. Sometimes, they are so simply stated, we might overlook the evidence. One of the most powerful is John 3:16, "For God so loved the ...

To shine their light, this church must not conform to the world. Therefore, "In the beginning" does not declare the beginning of God, but rather, the beginning of God's creation: the beginning of time. God ...

The sinner may draw great comfort from them because they are unlike the shifting things of this world, things that are prone to change and decay. The things that Paul here enumerates are security and serenity to the sinner. They strengthen our faith and our hope. They ...

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth"-GENESIS 1:1 Satan's attempts to challenge Genesis 1:1 is not a challenge of modern science or even from the enlightened philosophers of the 1900's. As Solomon said, "There is no new thing under the sun." In Acts 17, almost 2000 years ago, Paul encountered "certain philosophers" at Athens who are referred to as the "Epicureans". This was one of their schools of modern philosophy who followed the teachings of one Epicurus. Do you know what that taught at this mod ...

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth"-GENESIS 1:1 When someone asks me where they should begin their study of the scriptures, I have learned from experience to tell them: " In the beginning of the Book; at Genesis 1:1." The reason I emphasize "from experience" is because I have learned that any person who is unwilling to acknowledge God as an all-wise and sovereign Creator will have little success with the rest of the Book. They may as well close it and stop there if they are unwilling to believe the first verse of His book. B ...

Surely, this is the greatest question that has ever been put before the minds of men. And from our answer we will discover much about ourselves: "What think ye of Christ?" Today, we will explore this great question of Christ under three headings: (1) Thinking; (2) How our thinking affects us; (3) The greatest question.
