Born Again - The Doctrine of Effectual Calling

Predestination and the Bible

2011 February 20

Predestination is a subject that receives a lot of criticism from people who should know better. They are supposedly Christians, and say they believe the Bible, but there are certain parts of it they condemn like the plague. I am thankful the medical profession does not slander their findings as roughly as some Christians slander their book. Predestination is a biblical term, used in scripture to describe the Holy work of a sovereign God. Surely, it should be believed, respected, and embraced by every person who claims to love God, and His Holy Word.

Election and the Bible

2011 February 16

C.H. Spurgeon, the great preacher in the 1800's said, "There is a natural hatred in the human heart against the doctrine of election." As much as it is taught in the Bible we wonder why more Christians do not embrace it … and believe it. Perhaps the reason is because it dethrones man, and his free will, and places Christ, and His will, as the only hope for sinners. The doctrine of election is taught in many ways in the Bible. For instance, it was God that elected Abraham to be the father of a great nation.

LAODICEA--The Lukewarm Church

2007 January 22

"So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth." (Revelation 3:16) Churches have doctrines--but they also have temperatures! If a church is alive, Jesus is present, and He is aware of them both. While doctrine is most important, other things factor in to our Lord's analysis of a church's condition. Laodicea didn't seem to have a problem with their doctrine. Nor is there any mention of reprobates or unconverted people in their midst. Yet, Jesus was just as angry with these as He was with some of the other churches mentioned. He was ...

THE PREACHING OF THE CROSS

2006 May 14

"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God"-1 Corinthians 1:18 We have heard some say that they detest Christianity because it is a bloody, messy religion with its cross and suffering. Their abhorrence of Christ's blood and His suffering is a witness that separates all of humanity: those who view the cross as foolishness and those who view the cross as the power of God. This was Paul's line in the sand, his measuring rod, his litmus test as to those who were truly saved. Thus he wrote to the church at Corinth, "For th ...

FEET SHOD WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE

"And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;"- Ephesians 6:15 The third piece of armor the apostle encourages the Christian to wear has to do with our feet or how we are walking. An old song in a hymnbook has a verse predicated upon this scripture that illustrates the full meaning of Paul's thought. It says, "Let us walk in the light of the gospel divine." "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls"-Matthew 11:28,29 Before us we have a glorious invitation, not for a physical rest, but more importantly, a spiritual rest. To find rest, we must have peace and here we find great consolation, our invitation is from the Prince of Peace. Let us begin b ...

#107 COMFORTS FOUND ON A LATE FLIGHT

2000 September 30

A few weeks ago, while preaching in the state of Georgia, I was returning home Saturday night in time to preach at my home church on Sunday morning. As I approached the ticket counter I discovered that the plane was held up due to weather and we might not make our connecting flight. I thought of Paul, and how many times his trips were delayed, not due to plane connections, but due to shipwreck, stonings, beatings and all manner of persecutions. I found great comfort in knowing that even though preachers could be hindered from preaching at a desired place, God would not allow circumstances ...

"Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us"-Luke 1:1 We conclude our exposition of "those things which are most surely believed among us" with a brief view of the glorious doctrine which concerns the preservation of the Saints. This doctrine highlights the fact that all of the elect of God shall be kept by God and shall be eternally saved; though they may walk in ...

"Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us"-Luke 1:1 Irresistible grace is most surely one of the things believed among the Saints in every age. Grace is simply unmerited favor; blessings bestowed upon the undeserving. Irresistible means that the objects of God's grace are completely passive in the blessings and benefits bestowed. It must be that way ...

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report"-Hebrews 11:1,2 Faith is a powerful weapon. It is a part of the Christian armor. Paul refers to it as the "Shield of faith". As the warrior would hold his shield before him as he advanced in battle, the Christian holds his faith ever before him as he marches though this world. Simply put, faith is believing that God will do what He ...

Here we become willing to die to self for the cause of Christ and the prosperity of His kingdom. Such is the attitude ...
