"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things"-Philippians 4:8 Though many things have changed since the days of the apostle, some things have not. One of those is how our thinking affects us. Paul gave the Philippians a catalogue of things to think about for their profit. I will give our readers, in the year 2000, the same list for their own good and edification. As I will endeavor to show you, how we think is very important to our health, both naturally and spiritually. God knows it, that is why He inspired the apostle to chronicle such meditations. Satan knows it, that is why he is bending all of his influence to encourage us to think otherwise. Consider with me, for just a few moments, how our thinking affects us. THOUGHTS ARE SEEDS It is wisdom when we learn that our thoughts are little seeds, planted in the mind, that produce fruit of their own kind. They are the eggs that hatch into actions. Like it or not, our actions are the fruit of our thoughts. Sow a thought, reap an action, eat of the fruit thereof. Though it would be impossible for us to live above evil thoughts, we should be as the careful gardener who labors to keep his acreage free from weeds and thorns. Good thinking requires an effort, not only to avoid meditations of sinful lusts, but also to plant the proper seeds. HOW SATAN WORKS Though a child may have loving parents, and is brought up in a profitable environment, seeds can be planted that produce an evil kind of fruit. As Paul warned the Corinthians, "Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners"-1 Cor. 15:33. Sometimes my children will say to me, "Dad, you see evil in everything". But as I researched the effect of music upon the minds of our children I came across this article, "The American Medical Association(AMA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics have voiced concerns about certain lyrics used in heavy metal and rap music. The AMA says that messages in these genres may pose a threat to the physical health and emotional well being of particularly vulnerable children and adolescents. The AMA has identified six potentially dangerous music themes: drug and alcohol abuse, suicide, violence, satanic worship, sexual exploitation, and racism. Both the AMA and the Academy of Pediatrics support voluntary regulation and increased social responsibility in the music industry"(Internet Download). What is the AMA and the Academy of Pediatrics saying? What do the statistics reveal? Simply this: evil seeds planted in the mind produce evil actions: how we think affects us. If Satan has your thoughts, he has your future. Seldom is a suicide attempt a spontaneous action. It is frequently the result of a carefully thought out plan from a little seed sown. Violence in the school has been shown to be a carefully thought out and planned meditation. Hateful thoughts are the beginning of racism. Pornography is the beginning of unfaithfulness. Seed, powerful seeds, planted in the mind will mature and entangle our lives. Certainly, we do not see evil in everything. But we should see evil in evil. Satan will tell us we can expose our minds to evil with little harm. Can we walk though the rain and not get wet? Can you walk thought a cuckle-briar patch and not bring one or two along for the ride. THERE IS A BATTLE FOR YOUR MIND There has always been a battle for the mind. Did not Satan temp Eve to think hard thoughts against God? He started her to unprofitable thinking when he said, "Ye shall not surely die. Ye shall be as gods." It is by slogans and commercials that the public thinking is swayed into a modus operandi. In the past, the Marlboro cowboys would have us think that smoking their brand of cigarette was the best thing we could do. Today, one of them is saying, "Bob, I've got emphysema." Yes, the world wants to tell us how and what to think. If they tell you to march to the beat of a different drummer, you can be sure that the drummer is in their band, playing their score. Let the Christian be found, "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ"-2 Cor 10:5. What a bountiful harvest our lives will then produce!
